Sport and Recreation South Africa working with Boxing South Africa, South African National Boxing Association and the nine provinces is organising the hosting of the National Boxing Indaba.
The National Indaba has to be preceded by the Provincial Izindaba.
The Eastern Cape Province will be hosting their Boxing Izindaba today and tomorrow (Saturday) at Mpekweni Beach Resort.
The primary objective of the provincial Izindaba and National Indaba is to conduct a diagnostic analysis on the status of boxing in South Africa and develop a turn around strategy for the success of boxing going forward. The Minister of Sport and Recreation resolved to convene provincial and a national boxing meetings after several concerns were lodged with the Ministry.
The concerns and challenges range from the lack of support systems for active and retired boxers, insufficient talent development plans and career planning for boxers, managers and trainers.
In addition a lack of a commercial and financially viable business model for boxing South Africa is apparent.
The lack of articulation between professional and amateur boxing at structural and inter-phase levels and spheres will also be on the agenda.
The Indaba is therefore convened to conduct a brutally frank, but constructive consultative process and dialogue throughout the boxing fraternity. The outcome must transform boxing for good and for the better.
This discourse should place the interests of boxers, especially women boxers at the centre of our development trajectory.
