Storytelling and Patterned Paper Mixing with Trellis Prints

Storytelling and Patterned Paper Mixing with the Trellis PrintsThere are some scrapbook page?stories?and patterned paper prints that naturally mix well with the trellis motif. We?ve got ideas for using them on scrapbook layouts here.

The trellis print is an abstract motif based on geometrical shapes and can take several forms, echoing (and taking its name from) the supporting structure of interwoven pieces in a garden or a gate covered with climbing vines or flowers.??

get a French Provincial look by mixing trellis and floral prints

Lise Mariann Alsli?says, ?This page is about how proud my daughter felt when she posted her post cards for her grandparents when we were at Disneyland Paris a year ago.??

I love using strict geometric paper to calm down crazy floral patterns, and for this layout it worked well. The quieter tone-on-tone geometric pattern helps the viewer focus on the picture and the title. The strict trellis feels kind of French to me as does the floral pattern. I love the way that supports the fact that my daughter is in France in the picture. I also made the cute little letters from left over pieces of paper to fit in with the theme.?

evoke a sense of outdoor gardens with trellis and floral prints

Katie Scott?says, ?I got ?group shots with my point-and-shoot camera?s self timer when my family was in town. All of the girls in the photos have the common ancestor Grace so I called this one ?Grace?s Girls.? Growing up, we always went outside to stand in front of a pretty bush or garden to have photos taken.?

?During a recent vist from family, after we looked at lots of old photos, we went outside to take pictures. I don?t have a New England style garden like my family did our olden days photos, but I thought the trellis paper helped to make these group family photos feel like the old ?stand-in-the-garden? photos.?I mixed in old fashioned looking florals as a nod to my grandmother who is not in the photos but who inspired the title of this page.? I also used a camera embellishment since I took these photos with my hot pink Canon point and shoot!?

Andrea?says, ?This is a?page about how proud I am of my two kids.?

?The trellis-print patterned paper was part of a kit. I don?t use pattered paper much, and here I toned it down by adding a gradient effect behind the photo using Photoshop. My layout design was inspired by the Scrapbook Coach Symmetry Class. I mixed a trellis-print patterned paper with a small bit of tone-on-tone floral (behind the key) and layered high-contrast leaves and flourishes over it. The leaves and butterflies connect to the trellis and the outdoors, while the leaves and butterflies support my theme of growth.?

mix trellis with damask prints for a nostalgic, past-times feeling

Kiki Kougioumtzi?says, ?This layout is about how my parent?s house was when I was a child. I got so many details from looking at just one photo. A photo is a 1000 words, as they say. I tried to write as many details as I could remember.?

?I used a blue trellis print as my background and then the smae trellis print in grenn as a foundation. I complemented the trellis with damask patterned papers. Both of these motifs are vintage, timeless and elegant: the perfect fit for my story.?

mix trellis and feather prints to tell a beach story

Carrie Arick?says, ?This page is about the little treasures we bring home from each trip to the beach.?

?If you buy a beach bucket and shovel, chances are you?ll also get sieve with it to pan for beach treasure. A sieve is really just a trellis pattern which is why I chose a trellis print for this story.??I mixed the trellis print with a white-on-neutral feather pattern. It?s not an obvious choice, but because we often find feathers while sifting through sand, it makes me think of the beach. The two patterns have obvious contrast in size and density, yet a unity in value and color, and so they and mix well. ?I alternated the squares of patterned paper to emphasize their contrast. The grid, reinforced with stitching and bordered with high-contrast Swiss dot Washi tape, keeps the page from feeling chaotic. There is also a subtle effect of back and forth between the two prints, like a motion one uses with a sieve, another touch that supports the story.??

tell farm stories with trellis, vintage, and fruit motifs

Christy Strickler?says of her photos, ?After visiting a pick-your-own strawberry farm, my son discovered that the strawberries were not as sweet as he had hoped.?

?Trellis patterns are perfect for documenting stories about gardening or farms. To support the story about picking strawberries on the farm, I added paper with advertisements for garden supplies. I chose a chevron pattern to represent the excitement( and then disappointment) over picking the berries and then discovering how sour they were. My Grandfather used to talk about how his family documented their crops in a ledger. This inspired me to use a ledger style piece of paper as the canvas. The strawberry theme also allowed me to slip in a lot of pink.?

die-cut a full-size trellis to let a text print with a message show through

Ashley Horton?says, ?I went out to do a little photo shoot one afternoon, and the kids wanted to join in, too. They are not shy when it comes to the camera.?

Ashley cut a trellis patter from a full page of white cardstock with her Silhouette Cameo and layered it over a text-print. She says, ?a trellis reminds me of flowers, flowers remind me of gifts for Valentine?s Day, and Valentine?s Day reminds me of love, which ties in with the theme of my photos.? I love the open and strong look to the Trellis pattern, and that the openings allow the ?love this? text from my patterned paper show through.?

weave a trellis with paper strips

Michelle Hernandez?says,??I love this photo of my daughter wearing her Grandma?s sun hat and doing her favorite thing ever: messing with sticks and water. She can easily sit there for hours.?

?I found combining trellis patterned paper with a second print challenging I realized that actual trellises are usually simple criss-cross fences used in gardens so I made a spring-themed page and added flowers and the chipboard swirls. I couldn?t decide if the flowers were individual shapes or a second pattern so I colored the embossed polka dots to bring in more pattern play.?

make a trellis from a fussy-cut hexagon pattern

Marcia Fortunato?says, ?My son has enjoyed his Metroparks internship immensely this summer and has been excited to share with me the things he?s learning and finding. This layout documents some of the things he?s brought home to show me.?

Marcia made a trellis from a patterned paper of hexagons. She cut out the centers of the hexagons and filled them with photos, a woodgrain print and journaling. The vertical band of open hexagons echoes a tall trellis in a garden?which makes it a good match for nature photos. Marcia raised it off the background with foam tape.

Marcia says, ?This design helps compartmentalize?the many small?photos.?The background tone-on-tone tree print has enough pattern to be interesting but is subtle enough to allow the photos to shine.?

Ex-FBI agent to plead guilty to being AP source

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A former FBI explosives expert said Monday he will plead guilty to revealing secret information for an Associated Press story about a U.S. intelligence operation in Yemen in 2012. The story led to a leaks investigation and the seizure of AP phone records in the government's search for the information's source.

Donald Sachtleben of Carmel, Ind., said in court papers that he provided details of the operation to a reporter. Four months ago, Sachtleben also acknowledged he distributed and possessed pornographic images of underage girls.

A plea agreement filed in U.S. District Court in Indianapolis calls for 11 years and eight months in prison for both crimes.

The Justice Department said in a statement that its pursuit of Sachtleben was made easier by the child pornography investigation, but that Sachtleben was not identified as a suspect in the leaks case until after investigators had analyzed the AP phone records and compared them to other evidence in their possession.

AP spokesman Paul Colford said, "We never comment on sources."

The deal is the latest legal action in the Obama administration's aggressive pursuit of people it believes have revealed government secrets, including seeking records and even testimony of journalists who prosecutors believe were given classified information and then published stories about it.

Monday's court filing stems from an investigation launched by the Justice Department shortly after AP reported that U.S. intelligence had learned that al-Qaida's Yemen branch hoped to launch a spectacular attack using a new, nearly undetectable bomb aboard a U.S.-bound airliner around the anniversary of Osama bin Laden's death. The AP's May 7, 2012, story attributed details of the operation, including that the FBI had the bomb in its possession, to unnamed government officials.

CIA Director John Brennan has called the leak "irresponsible and damaging," while Attorney General Eric Holder said the story was the result of "a very serious leak, a very grave leak."

Just over a year after the story appeared, on May 10, the Justice Department informed AP that it had secretly obtained nearly two months of call records for more than 20 telephone lines used by AP reporters and editors, including some who worked on the story.

The news cooperative protested the government's actions as chilling to investigative journalism and the company and its reporters did not cooperate in the investigation. AP chief executive Gary Pruitt called the records' seizure a "massive and unprecedented intrusion" into how news organizations gather the news.

The court records do not identify AP or name the reporter who communicated with Sachtleben. But the headline from the AP story that ran on May 7, 2012 is reproduced in the federal court records and Larry Mackey, Sachtleben's Indianapolis-based lawyer, said the AP is the news organization described in the papers.

Sachtleben spent 25 years as an FBI special agent bomb technician and worked on major cases involving terrorist attacks, the government said. He retired in 2008, but was rehired as an FBI contractor and kept his "top secret" security clearance and access to the FBI lab in Quantico, Va.

In court papers, Sachtleben said he visited the FBI lab on the morning of May 2, 2012, at the very time that FBI experts were examining the bomb. Sachtleben shared that information with a reporter the same morning, the government said.

The AP story ran five days later, on May 7, 2012. The news organization had initially agreed, for several days, to the Obama administration's requests to hold off on publishing it.

The child pornography investigation did not become public until May 11, when the FBI searched Sachtleben's home and seized a Sony laptop from his truck in the driveway. The FBI said it found 30 photos and videos of child pornography on the computer. Sachtleben was arrested the same day. The government said it began investigating Sachtleben for child pornography after an email address linked to him popped up on a known child-porn web site.

Sachtleben apologized in a brief, three-sentence statement that his attorneys released on his behalf Monday afternoon.

"I am deeply sorry for my actions," he said. "While I never intended harm to the United States or to any individuals, I do not make excuses for myself."

The Justice Department said it had already had in its possession, as part of the child pornography investigation, Sachtleben's cell phone, computer and other electronic media, including a CD/DVD containing classified information.

But the department said in a statement that it was able to link Sachtleben to the unauthorized disclosures about the Yemen plot only after investigators had analyzed the seized AP phone records and compared them to other evidence already in their possession.

Based on the analysis, they were able to get a search warrant for a new and more thorough look at his phone and computer, the department said.

Around the same time that the government told AP its phone records had been obtained secretly, court records were made public that showed that prosecutors had obtained a search warrant for the emails of Fox News reporter James Rosen. The government says Rosen received secret information about North Korea from State Department adviser Stephen Kim, who faces criminal charges over the alleged disclosure. Kim's case is among seven the administration has brought against people suspected of providing classified information, more than under all previous presidents combined.

In a speech on May 23, in the days following the disclosures of the government's actions in the two cases, President Barack Obama defended his administration's pursuit of leakers of government secrets. But he also said Congress should consider a law that generally would protect journalists from government subpoenas and allow judges, in rare instances, to decide whether national security concerns trump press freedoms. The Senate Judiciary Committee approved such a measure on Sept. 12 and a similar bill has been introduced in the House.

The president also directed Holder to review the Justice Department rules, first drafted in the wake of Watergate-era government abuses, that guide efforts to obtain reporters' records.

The department announced on July 12 that it would toughen its guidelines for subpoenaing reporters' phone records, and also raise the standard the government needs to meet before it can issue search warrants to gather reporters' email.

The changes included creation of a News Media Review Committee to advise top officials when the department seeks media-related records in investigations. Another change requires the government to give advance notice to the news media about subpoena requests for reporters' phone records unless the attorney general determines that "for compelling reasons," such notice would pose a clear and substantial threat to the integrity of the investigation.

AngelList raises $24M from Google Ventures, many others

Vicki Thompson

AngelList, led by Naval Ravikant, has raised $24 million to help expand what it offers founders and funders. The funding was led by Google Ventures and Atlas Venture but included more than 100 others.

AngelList, the leading network connecting startup investors and entrepreneurs, has raised $24 million in a move by co-founder and CEO Naval Ravikant to expand the platform's capabilities.

Google Ventures, the Kauffman Foundation and Atlas Venture led the round, which was reported to have been done at a valuation of $150 million. Others joined in, I am told, with more than 110 other institutions and individuals participating. The list includes Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Mitch Kapor, Marc Andreessen, Max Levchin and Ev Williams.

Ravikant declined to comment about the funding when contacted today.

I am told by sources knowledgable of the deal that none of the funders were given a seat on AngelList's board, nor will they be privy to inside information.

The news comes on the eve of federal regulators lifting a ban that prohibits startups and investment funds from doing public fundraising.

Ravikant has been wary of advising startups on AngelList to appeal to the public in their fund-raising efforts because of a set of proposed regulations that could take effect in the future. The changes are part of the implementation of the JOBS Act that has taken the SEC more than a year to implement.

He wrote a letter to the Securities and Exchange Commission in August that warned of dire consequences from the proposed rules. In particular, he cited proposed requirements that startups announce their intentions to raise money 15 days before they begin public fundraising and update the filing whenever terms are changed.

But I am told by people familiar with the matter that beginning tomorrow, AngelList will allow its platform to be used by startups that want to take the leap.

Blue or white: What color is your city's collar? As local work forces evolve, civic identities stick

manufacturing

Pedestrians and workers stand by an entrance gate to the World Trade Center site in November 2011 in New York City.

Spencer Platt / Getty Images file

Pedestrians and workers stand by an entrance gate to the World Trade Center site in New York City. For all its historic grit, about 80 percent of workers in the Big Apple are white collar.

In a city still packing a wicked-hard edge, an old maxim lives on: ?Boston is about sports, politics and revenge.? From the clout of its labor unions to the grit of its Red Sox, Beantown remains synonymous with working class.

And the locals like it that way.

?Whatever your ethnic tribe, race or class, people here embrace the notion that Boston is a tough town. It has a certain romanticism,? said Thomas Whalen, associate professor of social sciences at Boston University. ?You hear it when the (Boston) Celtics meet the (Los Angles) Lakers (in the NBA). Boston revels in the fact that we?re not like the people in ?La La Land,? that our team is blue collar.?

But the professor sees the irony in that brawny civic pride. With an economic base bolstered by medical hubs, biotech companies and universities, today's Boston owns a distinctly white-collar look. Los Angeles, conversely, is a working-class epicenter: its 362,700 manufacturing jobs lead all other cities, according to Michael Shires, associate professor of public policy at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif.

As factory jobs continue to vanish, however, and the tech sector surges, many historically industrial towns are fading from blue collar to white collar ? or, maybe more appropriately, to no collar ? while scattered municipalities with seemingly white-collar auras are quietly clinging to working-class values.

Consider San Jose, Calif., home to eBay and Cisco Systems, a dot-com and Silicon Valley powerhouse. Yet 22.6 percent of that city?s work force is composed of blue-collar jobs: production, transportation, construction, installation and maintenance, according to U.S. Census figures. That means San Jose possesses a higher share of manual laborers than two cities long known for their trains and smokestacks: Philadelphia (21.8 percent) and Pittsburgh (16.5 percent).

"It?s possible these traditional collar-labels, crafted in the East Coast/Midwest industrial economy, don?t apply anymore," said Kim Walesh, director of economic development for San Jose. "Generally, we don?t talk in terms of ?collars? around here ? with business casual in vogue, very few people in Silicon Valley wear white collars anymore.

"More seriously, San Jose has the nation?s second-highest concentration of advanced manufacturing activity," Walesh added. "Yet, this is not your grandfather?s factory floor. The blue-collar production workers of the past are skilled technicians in shop-coats or polo shirts helping engineers figure out how to actually build the next innovative product."

At the same time, some Rust Belt regulars retain their blue-collar roots amid the shifting job tides. In Cleveland, 30.7 percent of the work force is made up of people in manual-labor trades; in Detroit that share is 29.72 percent, Census stats show.

And La La Land? Built largely on the city's contribution to silver screens, Los Angeles can still claim a healthy dose of blue-collar status, though L.A.'s production jobs have dropped by nearly half from the more than 700,000 it possessed at the height of the Cold War, Shires said.?

"Aerospace still continues strong in the region that gave us the space shuttle and the B-2 bomber and will continue to fare well in the era of private space and drones," Shires said. "Los Angeles' identity, however has just been driven by its glitzier and higher-profile successes in entertainment."?

Of course, no major city is all executive class or all working class. But some cities tilt more definitively white than blue. Based on the same U.S. Census data sets, Seattle?s tech-heavy work force (Zillow and Amazon, with Microsoft headquartered in nearby Redmond, Wash.) is composed of just 12.57 percent of people who earn a paycheck via manual labor. In Boston that rate is 14.7 percent, and in New York City, rife with financial giants (Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase), it?s 19.6 percent.

"This used to be a city where middle-class people could find reasonable housing and good schooling, but it?s increasingly becoming a place where that?s impossible," said Ann Morning, associate professor of sociology at New York University. "Instead, people talk about super-wealthy elites from around the world coming and buying the mega-luxury apartments then having to share the city with all the service people who make those luxury accommodations possible."

At the end of World War II, 41 percent of the Big Apple's work force included craftsmen, laborers, foremen and other blue-collar types, according to the book?"Working-Class New York."?

"Today, it's increasingly hard for elementary school teachers or librarians or firemen or policemen to live (in Manhattan). You hear people talk about that here. The other boroughs are the holding community, the bedroom communities for the people who do service work in Manhattan," Morning said.?

How about college sociology professors??

"Yes, I live in Manhattan, and in fact was born here," Morning said, adding with a smile: "It is only possible, though, because my employer subsidizes my housing."

Auburn opens Gus Malzahn era with 31-24 victory against Washington State

AUBURN, Alabama -- Auburn's offense sputtered early, but its defense held Washington State at bay when the Tigers needed it most Saturday night at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

The Tigers responded to several deep drives, forcing three turnovers to hold on for a 31-24 victory in front of an announced crowd of 85,095 fans.

Hybrid safety Robenson Therezie picked off two passes, including a potentially game-saving grab in the end zone with under 6 minutes remaining, as the Tiger smanaged to hold on and run out clock after yet another defensive stop -- this one an overthrown pass by Cougars quarterback Connor Halliday on fourth down.

Auburn also counted on its special teams, which helped produce a touchdown and three field goals on Tre Mason's 100-yard kickoff return in the second quarter and kicker Cody Parkey's three field goals.

Parkey was 3-for-4 on field goals, scoring the Tigers' final nine points to stave off the upset-minded Cougars. Parkey hit a career-long 47-yarder to give Auburn a 25-21 lead with 6:51 remaining in the third quarter. Meanwhile, the Auburn offense sputtered for most of the game.

The debut of Nick Marshall didn't quite go as planned. He did not complete pass until his fifth try, a 15-yard completion to Quan Bray before Tre Mason added a five-yard touchdown run two plays later.

Ryan White's two-point conversion run, which was reviewed and upheld, gave Auburn the 8-7 lead with 2:26 remaining in the first quarter.

The Cougars grabbed the lead quickly on its first drive, going 12 plays (70 yards through the air) and Jeremiah Laufasa pushed through the Auburn defensvie line for a 4-yard touchdown run.

Washington State drove 67 yards on nine plays as Halliday again hit his receivers in stride. The drive was helped by back-to-back offsides penalties. Bobby Ratliff's slant route in stride allowed him to out-muscle safety Jermaine Whitehead for the final two yards on the 7-yard touchdown catch with 8:02 remaining in the second quarter. It put Washington State ahead 14-8.

Auburn only needed 16 seconds to respond as Mason returned the kickoff 100 yards, turning the corner with his blazing speed to out-run the defense and leave kicker Mike Bowlin grabbing for his heels near the 30-yard line.

Auburn has returned a kickoff in each of the last six seasons, the fourth-best mark in the nation.

Washington State responded with a five-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to take a 21-15 lead with 6:18 remaining. The Cougars picked up 53 yards by running Leach's go-to play with four vertical routes.

The Tigers again responded quickly. This time it was Corey Grant running 75 yards on an end-around run for the touchdown. He tip-toed the left sideline, but officials were unable to find conclucsive video evidence to overturn the call.

Auburn scored 13 unanswered points in the second half before Andrew Furney's 43-yard field goal pulled Washington State within 28-24 with 4:18 remaining in the third quarter.

Senegalese singer Youssou Ndour removed from gov't

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) ? Grammy-winning singer Youssou Ndour is no longer Senegal's tourism minister, according to the Cabinet list announced by new Prime Minister Aminata Toure.

Over the weekend, President Macky Sall dismissed his former premier in the first major shake-up of his government since he was elected in a landslide victory in March 2012. Toure, his former justice minister, was appointed prime minister, becoming the second woman in the West African nation's history to hold the post.

On Monday, she announced the 32 members of her Cabinet, and Ndour's name did not appear on the list. No reason was given for his removal.

The 53-year-old Ndour tried to run in the 2012 election but was disqualified on a technicality. He became tourism minister in April 2012.

Festa delle Cantine in Manciano, Tuscany - Tuscan Recipes Food ...

by Elisa Scarton Detti

It?s hard to say arrivederci to summer in Tuscany, which is why the Maremmani in the region?s south always do it with a glass of wine in their hands.

While it sounds like they?re drinking their sorrows away, they?re not. September is one of the most exciting times of the year for local foodies and wine lovers.?It?s wine month.

In the Maremma that means the vendemmia or annual wine harvest. All over the province, hundreds of vineyards will spend the month collecting the grapes to make next year?s celebrated Morellino di Scansano and Bianco di Pitigliano.

In places like Scansano, you can sit by the Medieval walls and watch the farmers work in a tradition that is generations? old. Or you can join the rest of the region in lifting your glass in a bridisi to Manciano?s annual Festa delle Cantine on September 6-8.

For almost 20 years, the Festa delle Cantine has been gathering the area?s wine producers and wine appreciators for a celebration that is one part raucous party and two parts incredible food and drink.

In the past, the festival was famous for homebrews so strong they could knock an unsuspecting tourist out, but it?s since become more sophisticated. These days, the only tipple you?ll try will come from the professional producers who have spent centuries turning the dark and mineral-rich volcanic soil around Manciano.

The highlight of any Festa delle Cantine is, of course, the wine. Every year the area?s producers offer bottle upon bottle of their best right in their cellars. Visitors aren?t normally allowed in here, so it?s an incredible opportunity to see where the magic happens among the oak barrels and glass bottles.

As the sun sets on the Spia della Maremma, as Manciano is affectionately called, the drinks begin to flow and people start to feel peckish. All the wine at the Festa delle Cantine is free, but each cellar has a signature dish or snack that you can buy if you like. These treats are all local favourites, like acquacotta and almond biscuits, prepared by Manciano?s housewives and nonne.

This year, there?ll be plenty to do between sips with concerts, children?s shows, dancing and the much anticipated fiaccolata, during which the majestic Maremman-breed horses and local cowboys, the butteri, parade through the town with lit torches.

For locals, the Festa delle Cantine is a chance to catch up with old friends in the name of tradition and free wine ? a good enough reason to party on its own. For tourists, the festival is a chance to experience Manciano at its liveliest on a weekend when everything from the food to the music is authentic and inspiring.

While for me, it?s an excuse to gorge myself crazy on ciaffagnoni ? a local pancake delicacy and the festival?s food of choice. If you ask any Mancianese, they?ll tell you the French can keep their crepes and the English can keep their pikelets because nothing beats ciaffagnoni.

As an expat who?s lived in the town for more than half a decade, I have to agree. Ciaffagnoni are beautifully light and incredibly easy to make. They can be enjoyed with a sprinkling of sugar or as tradition dictates, with lashings of parmigiano cheese.?

The Festa delle Cantine is known for making the best ciaffagnoni around. It?s not often that you get to taste these treats as they?re more family cooking than fine dining. But for those of you who can?t make it to this year?s festival, I thought I would share my mother-in-law?s recipe.

A born-and-bred Mancianese, my mother-in-law guards her recipe like it?s made of gold. Her secret is lots of eggs and a splash of olive oil instead of butter for a true taste of authentic home style Tuscan cooking.

Boxing fraternity to face up to hard facts | ECTODAY

Sport and Recreation South Africa working with Boxing South Africa, South African National Boxing Association and the nine provinces is organising the hosting of the National Boxing Indaba.

The National Indaba has to be preceded by the Provincial Izindaba.

The Eastern Cape Province will be hosting their Boxing Izindaba today and tomorrow (Saturday) at Mpekweni Beach Resort.

The primary objective of the provincial Izindaba and National Indaba is to conduct a diagnostic analysis on the status of boxing in South Africa and develop a turn around strategy for the success of boxing going forward. The Minister of Sport and Recreation resolved to convene provincial and a national boxing meetings after several concerns were lodged with the Ministry.

The concerns and challenges range from the lack of support systems for active and retired boxers, insufficient talent development plans and career planning for boxers, managers and trainers.

In addition a lack of a commercial and financially viable business model for boxing South Africa is apparent.

The lack of articulation between professional and amateur boxing at structural and inter-phase levels and spheres will also be on the agenda.

The Indaba is therefore convened to conduct a brutally frank, but constructive consultative process and dialogue throughout the boxing fraternity. The outcome must transform boxing for good and for the better.
This discourse should place the interests of boxers, especially women boxers at the centre of our development trajectory.

South Africa prop Ferreira set for Toulouse move

South African prop Schalk Ferreira is set to sign for French giants Toulouse as a replacement for the injured Georgian Vasil Kakovin, a source close to the Top 14 club revealed on Saturday.

Ferreira, 29 and presently with the Eastern Province Kings, can also play hooker and would help fill a place in the front row which has been decimated by injuries.

Kakovin ruptured the cruciate ligaments in his right knee, fellow prop Antoine Guillamon fractured a bone in his right hand and Kakovin's compatriot hooker Jaba Bregvadze is also out for a long time with a triple fracture of the mastoid, all of them suffering the injuries in the 40-3 thrashing of Bayonne last weekend.

Ferreira, who came through the youth system with Western Province but had to at one point halt his career because of a neck injury before resuming it in 2012, is yet to sign, according to Toulouse president Jean-Rene Bouscatel.

"We are in discussions," he told RMC Sports.

"If he agrees he will come. We hope that is the case, but it is not yet a done deal."

Texas Football: David Ash Shows Flashes of Brilliance in Week 1 Win

In David Ash's first game running the no-huddle offense at Texas, he looked impressive as the Texas Longhorns look to make a run at a BCS bowl game.?

In the Longhorns' 56-7 win over the New Mexico State Aggies, Ash threw for 343 yards and completed 20 of his 28 pass attempts.?He also ran for 91 yards on just eight carries.?

Also, the 715 total yards of offense that Texas racked up on the Aggies is a school record.?

Last season, Ash threw for over 300 yards just three times in 12 starts and didn't accomplish the feat until Week 3. But now in the new uptempo offense, Ash looked much more comfortable, especially as the game went along.?

Ash actually struggled early in the game, throwing two interceptions and two touchdowns.?

But in the second half, Ash went to a whole new level that fans in Austin simply haven't seen yet from the junior gunslinger.?

In the final 30 minutes, Ash threw two more touchdowns, added a score on the ground and didn't turn the ball over once.?

One of the biggest concerns going into the season was whether or not Ash could grasp the concepts of an uptempo offense after struggling with his decision-making in his first two seasons.?

In his first two seasons, Ash racked up 23 touchdowns but 16 interceptions. Those simply aren't good numbers for a quarterback for the Longhorns.?

What grade would you give David Ash's performance in Week 1

What grade would you give David Ash's performance in Week 1

  • A

  • B

  • C

  • D

  • F

Coming into 2013, though, Ash had a new level of confidence. He also leads all Big 12 quarterbacks in career starts with 19, one more than TCU starter Casey Pachall.?

Texas head coach Mack Brown said at Big 12 media days that Ash would work well in the no-huddle offense.?

"We think we've got better players around him now," Brown said. "We should be better in the offensive line. He is much more confident than at any time. I?thought his comeback in the Alamo Bowl really, really helped him with our team, with his confidence, and I think it helps him nationally, and I think he'll have a big year."

Ash certainly seems to have adopted to the new system. It'll be interesting to see if he can keep up the momentum through the rest of the season. He'll get a good test in Week 2 against a pesky BYU Cougars team.?

Saturn moon's 'buoyant' mountains perplex, befuddle

What if Titan's crust isn't thin and brittle like an eggshell, but thick and rigid, with huge floating mountains? What does that do to the implications for ice volcanoes, subsurface seas, and life?

By Liz Fuller-Wright,?Correspondent / August 29, 2013

Saturn moon Titan reveals a hazy purple haze above its opaque orange atmosphere as the international Cassini spacecraft flies past Saturn's largest moon in 2004. A new study released August 28, 2013 suggests Titan's crust could be more rigid than previously thought.

European Space Agency/AP

Titan is tricky. The enormous moon of Saturn has topography like Earth's, but it's made of ice instead of rock. Throw in an opaque (and poisonous) atmosphere and a space probe that only occasionally passes by to pick up a new swath of data, and you have a truly mysterious planet. Er, moon.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

"Titan has been a hard planet to study," says Chuck Wood, a member of the Cassini science team based at the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, adding, "It's bigger than Mercury; that's why we call it a planet."

The opaque atmosphere has defeated Cassini's impressive cameras, leaving scientists relying on low-resolution radar and other instruments to interpret Titan's mysteries. "It's almost like seeing the moon with telescopes from Earth," says Dr. Wood. "It's hard to have enough resolution to be confident in what we're seeing."

Despite the challenges, scientists have been announcing new and bizarre findings from Titan, Saturn's biggest (and arguably weirdest) moon ever since NASA's Cassini-Huygens mission arrived at Saturn in 2004.?

Titan is a "deranged version of Earth!" scientists said. Titan?has lakes! When scientists?dropped the Huygens probe?through Titan's thick atmosphere, they saw shorelines! Rivers! Evidence of "exotic and exciting" methane-ice-sludge volcanoes! Five years later, a?methane rainstorm?made more headlines, followed by Titan's potential for?bizarre and smelly lifeforms,?mile-wide dunes?shaped by?'backward' winds, and theories about?Titan-esque DNA.

Last year, the liquid story got more involved, with the discovery of?a?humongous methane lake?in the (comparatively warm) tropics and growing evidence for a?subsurface ocean?underneath a frozen crust.

With that model, Titan is like an egg: liquid on the inside, thin and brittle on the outside. And there may or may not be a solid (or solid-ish) "yolk" somewhere deep inside.

Hundreds of Iraqis protest against lawmaker privileges

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Hundreds of protesters took to the streets in Baghdad and central and southern Iraq on Saturday against generous pension payments to lawmakers in a county where many are still struggling to get jobs and basic services.

Police surrounded the rare demonstration in the capital and security forces armed with batons, teargas and water canon broke up one gathering in the southern city of Nassiriya, witnesses and security forces said.

The protests marked widespread anger at the monthly payments of thousands of dollars and other benefits to government and parliamentary officials.

Distracted by sectarian attacks and political feuding, the government has done little to improve education, housing and other infrastructure.

Crowds chanted "oil is for the people, not the thieves", and "no to squandering the wealth" in a square in the east of the capital.

Security forces had closed most bridges connecting the two sides of Baghdad since Friday evening and blocked demonstrators from reaching their planned protest sites. Security forces also stopped media covering the demonstrations.

In Nassiriya, 300 km (185 miles) southeast of Baghdad, riot police armed with batons wounded 11 people and detained ten, security sources and witnesses said.

Unemployment was officially estimated at 11 percent in 2011 but the International Monetary Fund has said actual levels are likely to be considerably higher, especially among young people.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri-al Maliki said he supported the protesters' demands and would work to "amend the salaries of high-profile officials," in a statement on his website.

"If Maliki supports our demands, why are his forces forbidding us from demonstrating?" protest organizer Ahmed al-Baghdadi told Reuters by telephone. He said three activists had been detained by police in Baghdad.
