A highly regarded Fermanagh businessman, Gerry Dolan, who was a much loved family man, died peacefully at his Enniskillen home on Friday, March 16. The well-known Managing Director of Dolan's Filling Station, Dublin Road, Enniskillen, and the Centra store at the Diamond, passed away following a four and a half year illness, courageously borne.

Late of Claymore House, Dublin Road, Enniskillen, Gerry, who was 62, was originally from Tattymacall, Lisbellaw, a son of Brigid and the late Edward Dolan.

Following his education at St. Michael's College, he began his career in the Civil Service. For a time, he worked in Monaghan Bros., Enniskillen, and then started his own business at Dolan's Filling Station in 1971 (originally a garage with a small shop.)

In 1985, he stopped the motor repair service and the building was converted into a filling station and food shop - an enterprise he continued to expand over the years.

In 2004, he opened the Centra shop with off licence at the Diamond, Enniskillen and in February 2005, he added the Post Office business and Gerry served as the Subpostmaster. He was followed into the family concern in 1995 by his son, Niall, who currently manages the two shops.

As well as the business, his home, family and garden were major interests for Gerry, who married the former Mary McCarney in 1971; they made their home in Enniskillen and raised a family of two, Niall and Cathaoir.

As well as being a dedicated husband and father, Gerry's grandchildren were of tremendous interest to him and he enjoyed taking them to school and to the various organisations they were involved in.

He loved visiting Co. Donegal where he had a house, and he also liked cycling and walking and he was a keen photographer. When his children were young, he enjoyed boating on Lough Erne and going on caravan holidays, mainly in Donegal.

A great gentleman and loving person, who left his mark wherever he went, Gerry is remembered for his fairness, good nature and business acumen. A knowledgeable man, he was widely read. A very keen charity worker, he particularly directed his efforts to the Queen's University Belfast Leukaemia Research Fund; in his memory, donations in lieu if desired, are being directed to this cause - c/o Dolan's Filling Station, Dublin Road, Enniskillen.

Gerry's funeral at St. Michael's Church, Enniskillen on Monday morning (March 19) - a mass in thanksgiving for his life - attracted a huge attendance reflecting the wide respect felt for him. The main Celebrant was Canon Peter O'Reilly and the concelebrants were the Rev. Fr. Chris O'Donnell; the Rev. Fr. Brian D'Arcy; Monsignor Sean Cahill; and the Rev. Fr. John Halton.

Family members were actively involved in the prayers, readings, as Eucharistic Ministers and bringing up the gifts. The music contributed greatly to the mass and served as a great source of comfort. Burial followed at Cross Cemetery.

Gerry is survived by his wife, Mary and their two sons, Niall and wife Irene, and Cathaoir and wife Leish, and he leaves five grandchildren Aoibhin, Garbhan, Odhran, Cadhla, and Diarmuid. Also surviving Gerry are his mother Brigid and his six siblings Eamon, Maureen, Bridie, Brendan, Carmel and Aidan; his brothers and sisters in law, nieces and nephews, the wider family circle and his friends.

His family is greatly appreciative of all the medical and nursing care Gerry received throughout his illness and they are also very thankful of all the support received over the years. The funeral director was Enda Love, Enniskillen.
