PITTSBURGH (AP) ? The Pittsburgh Pirates went 21 years between playoff games. The wait will be significantly shorter this time around.

Russell Martin homered twice, Francisco Liriano was dominant for seven innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates roared past Cincinnati for a 6-2 victory in the NL wild-card game Tuesday night.

In front of a black-clad crowd savoring its first postseason game since 1992, Marlon Byrd also connected and Andrew McCutchen had two hits and reached base four times for Pittsburgh.

"We're for real," McCutchen said. "We're definitely for real."

Liriano scattered four hits for the Pirates, who will face St. Louis in Game 1 of the NL division series Thursday. Liriano struck out five and walked one to win the first playoff game of his career.

"We didn't talk about one and done, we talked about one and run," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "Win one and run to St. Louis."

Cincinnati starter Johnny Cueto struggled in his third start since coming off the disabled list last month. Cueto gave up four runs in 3 1-3 innings and appeared rattled by a raucous ballpark that taunted him throughout by chanting his name.

Byrd, acquired by the Pirates in late August from the New York Mets, celebrated the first postseason at bat of his 12-year career ? 1,250 games ? by sending Cueto's fastball into the seats to give the Pirates the lead. The shot sent another jolt through an already electric crowd, which began singing "Cue-to, Cue-to" in unison when Martin stepped in.

Martin sent a drive into the bleachers in left field. The Reds never recovered, ending a 90-win season with a six-game losing streak.

Three of those losses came against Pittsburgh at Cincinnati in the final series of the season that determined the site of the win-or-die game.

Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker backed Cueto before the game, saying his ace "thrives on this environment." Maybe, but the right-hander never looked comfortable in front of the largest crowd in PNC Park history, a place where Cueto has dominated.

Cueto, who came in 8-2 at the ballpark by the Allegheny River, even lost his grip on the ball while standing on the mound.

A moment later, he lost his grip on the game.

Martin's 405-foot shot to left-center gave Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead and all the momentum Liriano would require.

Signed on the cheap in the offseason after a mediocre 2012 split between the Minnesota Twins and the Chicago White Sox, Liriano has been reborn in Pittsburgh. He went 16-8 with a 3.02 ERA during the regular season, his devastating slider nearly unhittable against left-handers.

The Reds proved no match. Joey Votto went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. Jay Bruce produced an RBI single in the fourth but Cincinnati never really threatened on a night baseball officially returned to Pittsburgh after a 20-year trek through purgatory.

Shin-Soo Choo homered in the eighth, a drive to right field that was upheld by video review.

Pittsburgh's 94-win regular season reignited a relationship sullied by years of mismanagement and miserable play. When the gates opened two hours before the first pitch, fans ? most of them dressed in black at the urging of MVP candidate McCutchen ? sprinted to their seats in anticipation of the club's first postseason game since Atlanta's Sid Bream slid into home ahead of Barry Bonds' throw in the bottom of the ninth in Game 7 of the 1992 National League championship series.

The victory sent the Braves to the World Series and the Pirates into an abyss it took an entire generation to escape.

The first step came with victory No. 82 on Sept. 9. The next came two weeks later when a win over the Chicago Cubs assured a wild-card spot. The most thrilling yet lifted the team with the 26th-highest payroll in the majors ($73.6 million) into a showdown with baseball royalty.

The Reds, meanwhile, head into an offseason that could be eventful. Baker has led Cincinnati to the playoffs in three of the last four years but the Reds failed to advance each time. They fell to the San Francisco Giants in five games ? after leading 2-0 ? in the division series in 2012 and were swept in the same round by Philadelphia in 2010.

This time, they didn't even make it that far. Cincinnati spent most of the season as the third team in a three-way race with the Pirates and the Cardinals for the NL Central title.

Cueto, who made three different trips to the disabled list this season with a strained lat, was pressed into service when projected starter Mat Latos discovered bone chips in his right (throwing) elbow.

At the time, it seemed like an upgrade. It wasn't. The Pirates made it 3-0 on sacrifice fly in the third by Pedro Alvarez and Cueto was pulled when Starling Marte doubled with one out in the fourth. Marte sprinted home on local boy Neil Walker's double off reliever Sean Marshall and Walker scored on a fielder's choice by Byrd to make it 5-1.

When Martin hit a drive to left off Logan Ondrusek in the seventh, the party seemingly unthinkable for a team that lost 105 games in 2010 began. Martin's long ball marked only the second multihomer playoff game in team history. Bob Robertson hit three in Game 2 of the 1971 NLCS.

This year, more than 232,000 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast?cancer. Fortunately, survival rates have been improving for nearly 25 years.?That trend is expected to continue thanks to the following advances in finding?and treating breast cancer.

?A better mammogram

Women have a powerful new tool in breast cancer diagnosis.? In January, Sentara Healthcare became the first Hampton Roads health provider to offer 3D mammography to its patients. The technology creates a three-dimensional image of the breast, allowing radiologists to view slices of tissue to find early cancer that otherwise could go undetected by regular 2D mammography.?

A study published in the June 2013 issue of the ?American Journal of Roentgenology? found that when compared with 2D mammography, the new 3D technology?developed by Hologic, Inc. increased breast cancer detection rates by 35 percent?and invasive cancer detection rates (the most serious form of breast cancer?by 53 percent.?

The study showed a 38 percent decrease in recall rates, meaning fewer women were called back for follow-up imaging. There was also an 11 percent drop in biopsy rates.?

?The findings ? demonstrate that Hologic 3D mammograms overcome many?of the limitations of conventional mammography, namely missed cancers and?unnecessary recalls,? says Peter Soltani, Hologic?s senior vice president and general manager of breast health. ?The use of this groundbreaking technology when?performing a screening exam allows radiologists to see distortions of the breast?tissue in greater detail than with 2D mammography. This results in earlier detection of cancers when they are easier to treat and a reduction in false positives that may look worrisome on conventional digital mammography.??

Dr. Kelley Allison, co-medical director of Sentara?s Dorothy G. Hoefer?Comprehensive Breast Center in Newport News, Va., says 3D mammography??is one of the biggest breakthroughs we?ve seen in breast cancer screening in 30 years.??It is allowing us to see cancers that we couldn?t have otherwise seen,? she continues. ?By going through the breast layer by layer, that?s allowing us to get a much better view of the architecture of the breast, and we?re able to pick out those small breast cancers much more easily.??

As of Oct. 1, eight Sentara breast imaging centers in Hampton Roads will?offer 3D mammography to patients. (Call 800-736-8272 for locations.)?

Note: There may be a $50 out-of-pocket fee for 3D mammography since?many insurance plans do not yet cover this new technology.?

Another use for Viagra

The popular impotence drug, Viagra, may be good for more than saving?men from embarrassment. It could potentially save women?s lives.?For more than 40 years, doxorubicin? a powerful chemotherapy drug? has been used successfully to treat various cancers. But while it?s effective, doxorubicin also causes irreversible heart damage, which often shows up years after cancer treatment. ?At the VCU Massey Cancer Center in Richmond, Va., researchers are now studying to see if Viagra might block doxorubicin?s heart-damaging effects on breast cancer patients.?Earlier laboratory tests suggest Viagra may also give a boost to doxorubicin?s cancer-fighting arsenal. The impotence drug has been shown to weaken?the defense systems of breast cancer cells, allowing more doxorubicin?to infiltrate?and ultimately kill?tumors.?

?We think this effect may be pretty useful [in the treatment of cancer],? says?Dr. Andrew Poklepovic, hematologist-oncologist and assistant professor of internal medicine at VCU Massey Cancer Center. ?If this [trial] looks positive, then?we would go forward with a very large trial with multiple centers using [Viagra]?as an adjuvant for survivorship both in beating the disease and living a more?positive lifestyle afterwards.??

Precision counts

VCU?s new TrueBeam linear accelerator brings a new level of precision and speed to radiation therapy, leading to shortened treatment times and fewer side?effects for breast cancer patients.?This advanced machine uses image-guided technology and higher dosage rates?to more accurately target cancerous tumors.?

?Physicians can monitor and adapt to changes in the patient?s anatomy caused?by the radiation therapy to personalize treatment plans based on each patient?s unique physiology,? reads a VCU press release. ?The optical camera system?even allows physicians to see patient motion during treatments, so they can?monitor and adjust as needed.? ?That means radiation can be more precisely directed to the tumor?s location,?sparing nearby healthy tissue.?

TrueBeam also delivers higher doses of radiation than other linear accelerators, shortening a 10-minute treatment down to two or three minutes.?

?Historically, physicians treated patients as if no physiological changes occur throughout the course of the radiation treatments,? says Dr. Jatinder Palta, chief physicist with VCU Massey Cancer Center?s Department of Radiation Oncology. ?We know this is not the case, and now advanced image-guided radiation therapy?using equipment such as TrueBeam potentially opens a lot of possibilities for?improving patient outcomes by personalizing treatment plans.??

Yuvraj Singh?s return will strengthen Team India

The Indian team for the sole T20 and first three ODIs has been selected. The biggest news from that is obviously the return of veteran all-rounder Yuvraj Singh. The southpaw?s selection was pretty much on expected lines after his great performances on the domestic circuit in recent times. The fitness programme he featured in when he was in France has definitely brought him back in shape, and the same has reflected in his recent performances. He was the top scorer for India A against West Indies A in the limited overs series, and came up with an impressive half-century leading India Blue during the Challenger Trophy. A fit and in-form Yuvraj would definitely make Team India stronger.

Most of the other senior players picked themselves, but there were a few interesting omissions and selections. Pace bowlers, Jaydev Unadkat and Mohammad Shami, both of whom featured in the series against Zimbabwe have been retained. It was expected that Umesh Yadav would find his place back in the team, but he has been axed. Perhaps the fact that he was very expensive in the Champions Trophy as well as the tri-series in West Indies went against him. Yadav definitely needs to work on this aspect of his game. Then again, with Irfan Pathan injured, it was expected that the selectors would retain Yadav to have some experience in the pace department.

Dinesh Karthik is another name who finds himself out of the reckoning yet again. He would have hoped to get yet another opportunity following a decent run in Zimbabwe. But, Karthik did not grab his chances before that, just like he has so often done in the past, and this axing thus does not seem too unfair. Karthik made two scintillating hundreds in the practice matches prior to the Champions Trophy, but when it came to the main event, he was a flop. He was given more chances because India won the Champions Trophy, but failed to grab those opportunities as well.

The fact that Ambati Rayudu, who was chosen for the Zimbabwe series, had an impressive debut, also went against Karthik. While the Tamil Nadu batsmen managed some decent scores, those paled in comparison to Rayudu, who looked much more in command. Karthik has only himself to blame. Had he come up with some striking innings, the selectors would have found it difficult to ignore his efforts. Murali Vijay is another man who is following in the footsteps of his senior state mate. Vijay just hasn?t looked the part in ODIs in spite of his obvious talent.

Among the others who were unlucky to miss out were Cheteshwar Pujara and seamer Mohit Sharma. Pujara deserves a longer in one-dayers and Sharma impressed in two games he played against Zimbabwe. But, with the regulars back in, it is understandable why they haven?t found a place. What wasn?t surprising was the fact that Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag remain out of contention. The message is clear-- they will need to perform extraordinarily to put their names back in the race.

Pennsylvania Pastor to Face Trial for Officiating Gay Son's Wedding

Rev. Frank Schaefer could be facing the end of his ministerial career because he officiated his son's same-sex wedding six years ago.

Six years ago, Rev. Frank Schaefer officiated his son?s same-sex wedding, and he is now being forced to stand trial before the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church for his support, reports Penn Live.

Schaefer, who is a pastor at Zion United Methodist Church of Iona, told the Lebanon Daily News the decision to officiate his son?s wedding ?in 2007 ?was a tough decision in some sense,? but he felt he had to follow his heart? on the matter, noting, ?The love for my son took over the fear of losing my job.?

However, Schaefer?s act of compassion for his son could mean the end of his ministerial career because his actions go against the United Methodist Church?s Book of Discipline, which forbids same-sex marriage.

Though Schaefer officiated his son?s wedding several years ago, he is only now being brought to trial because one of his congregants filed a complaint against him, 26 days before the church?s statute of limitations on a breach of discipline would have expired.

The United Methodist law prohibis clergy from officiating ?ceremonies that celebrate homosexual unions,? and if a jury of Schaefer?s peers finds that he did not conform to church teachings, he could lose his ordination credentials.

However, the impending trial hasn?t caused Schaefer?s support of marriage equality to waiver. ?To me this is a human rights issue,? he told Penn Live. ?If being of a certain sexual orientation is who you are as a person, if that is genetic, who are we to say that these persons do not have the same rights as everybody else??

Schaefer?s trial is scheduled for November 18.

The CHS student body is unstoppable.? From selling cookies to teaching Zumba classes, students know how to turn a simple idea into a moneymaking machine.

Thanks to the rise of social media and the ease of promoting one?s talents through the Internet, many students have recently chosen to turn their passions into profitable businesses using online publicity.

?Social Media has been awesome because it has made the whole process of promoting and advertising so much easier,? said junior WeiAnne Reidy, who started her own business just months ago.

Reidy has loved arts and crafts since a young age, but only recently took up an interest in fashion design.? Her clothing and accessories brand, Preidy (pronounced ?pretty?), offers handmade and customizable items.

?Each piece is completely made to fit the person who is ordering it, down to the materials and the size,? Reidy said.

The goal of Preidy is to make customers feel good about themselves through affordable and unique fashion that is trendy and chic.? Another student with business on the brain is junior Gavi Kaufmann.? After working at a day camp this past summer, she fell in love with teaching Zumba, a Latin-inspired workout dance, and became a certified instructor.

?I am certified in Zumba Basic and Zumba Gold,? Kaufmann said.? ?Zumba Basic is the foundation for Zumba, and Zumba Gold is for older active people with specific physical needs.?

Kaufmann is part of ZIN, the Zumba Instructor Network, which allows people all around the world to find instructors in their area.? She teaches Zumba at various youth group events, community centers and congregations.

You don?t count down those last few reps with your remaining breath and struggle through them. Zumba is fun and very energetic.? Before you know it, you?ve already spent an hour exerting all that energy you came with.?

Ivanina offers Zumba classes to teachers after school at Mill Creek Town Elementary School in Rockville.? While teaching, she likes to incorporate traditional salsa and merengue moves with other dance styles like hip-hop.

She is also a member of the ZIN program, which she believes is a crucial aspect to her success as a Zumba instructor.? Along with allowing local gyms, clubs, and dance studios to contact her for jobs, being a ZIN member has special benefits like selling Zumba merchandise.

Senior Nick Cohen officially opened his buisness Paddleboard Nick in early June.? Cohen has been paddle boarding since age 8 and decided this past summer that he wanted to put his entrepreneurial skills to the test.

Mommy, hungry!: Dark Day

This morning, our bus-stop friend's mom wasn't dressed for work. ?She can't go because her childcare center was shut with the shutdown. ?She'll be home with the kids instead of earning money to support them until she can work something else out; and instead of getting a head start with early childhood education, they'll be home alone. ?The family loses in many ways.

See, it's not a theoretical debate, the budget and the shutdown, but something that affects real people in real ways. ?But some of those millionaires in Congress don't really care; for them, it's an ideological battle of Right vs. wrong.

How is it that people who ARE the government despise the government enough to shut it down? ?Perhaps they should consider other careers--no doubt their choices aren't affected by a recession, sequester, or shutdown.

I cannot even begin to express my anger, disappointment, shame, and frustration with Congress, specifically the GOP.

And I think we should quit calling them the Grand Old Party. ?How about Grand Old Idiots?

Lastly, on a silly note, I'm angry that Panda Cam at the National Zoo has gone dark. ?I know this is not important in the grand scheme of things--they'll still feed the pandas and take care of them--but we'll miss that bright spot in our day as we watch the mom and cub.

And I imagine the Panda Cam is very important to the now out-of-work people who operated it and all those other hourly workers at the concession stands, shops, and booths at the National Zoo.

So, taking a cue from the wise Karen L.R., I'm taking a break from the news and FB today.
