(AP) ? Stress, family medical history or possibly even poison led to the death of Vladimir Lenin, contradicting a popular theory that a sexually transmitted disease debilitated the former Soviet Union leader, a UCLA neurologist said Friday.

Dr. Harry Vinters and Russian historian Lev Lurie reviewed Lenin's records Friday for an annual University of Maryland School of Medicine conference that examines the death of famous figures.

The conference is held yearly at the school, where researchers in the past have re-examined the diagnoses of figures including King Tut, Christopher Columbus, Simon Bolivar and Abraham Lincoln.

The 53-year-old Soviet leader suffered several strokes before dying in 1924 and what caused them isn't clear.

An autopsy found blood vessels in his brain were extremely hardened, results that have been difficult to understand, said Dr. Philip Mackowiak, who organizes the yearly event.

"Number one, he's so young and number two, he has none of the important risk factors," Mackowiak said.

Lenin didn't smoke ? he never let smokers near him. He also didn't have diabetes, wasn't overweight and the autopsy didn't find any evidence of high blood pressure, said Mackowiak, director of the medical care clinical center of the VA Maryland Health Care System, a co-sponsor of the event.

There was "considerable suspicion" among Russians at the time of Lenin's death that syphilis was to blame, Mackowiak said.

However, family history appears to have worked more against Lenin, Vinters said.

Lenin was treated for syphilis using the primitive medications available at the time, and while the sexually transmitted disease can cause strokes, there is no evidence from his symptoms or the autopsy that was the case with Lenin, Vinters said.

The Soviet leader's father died at 54 and both may have been predisposed to hardening of the arteries. Stress also is a risk factor for strokes, and there's no question the communist revolutionary was under plenty of that, the neurologist said.

"People were always trying to assassinate him, for example." Vinters said.

Lurie, a St. Petersburg-based expert in Russian history and politics who also spoke at the conference, said that while Lenin had several strokes, he believes Josef Stalin may finished him off with poison, a theory that Vinters said is a possibility.

Lenin's health had been growing worse over time. In 1921, he forgot the words of a major speech and he had to learn to speak again and write with his left hand after one stroke. A major stroke later left him paralyzed on one side and unable to speak.

However, Lurie said Lenin had recovered enough in early 1924 that he celebrated the new year and went hunting. Lenin, who supported Stalin's rise to power, may have realized he made a mistake and began aligning himself with Leon Trotsky, which caused Stalin to poison Lenin, the historian said.

Poisoning, in fact, eventually became one of Stalin's favorite methods of disposing of enemies, Lurie said.

"The funny thing is that the brain of Lenin still is preserved in Moscow, so we can investigate," Lurie said.

Lenin's embalmed body also still lies on public display in a Red Square mausoleum almost 20 years after the collapse of the communist state he helped bring to life.

Vinters, who reviewed autopsy records and the leader's clinical history, said toxicology tests that might have revealed poisoning were not conducted during the autopsy. Reports from the time also show Lenin was active and talking a few hours before his death.

"And then he experienced a series of really, really bad convulsions which is quite unusual for someone who has a stroke," Vinters said.

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) ? Have you seen those videos of servicemen and women coming home from war to joyous dogs who leap into their arms? Anyone who questions how much pets mean to soldiers has only to check it out.

To help connect homeless pets with current and past members of the U.S. military, the Michigan Humane Society has teamed up with Pets for Patriots. The partnership gives servicemen and women the opportunity to help save animal lives by receiving up to 75 percent off the adoption fee, and a lifetime 10 percent discount on veterinary care from MHS veterinary centers.

Additionally, Pets for Patriots will provide ongoing financial support toward the purchase of pet food and care products.

?This is MHS? second year partnering with Pets for Patriots, and we remain excited and proud to be helping these brave men and women find their new best friend,? said Michael Robbins, vice president of marketing and communications for MHS. ?There are so many animals out there that would make an absolutely wonderful pet, but are overlooked for one reason or another, be it their age, size or even a medical condition.?

This partnership has already paid dividends for a number of pets, including Annie, an 8-year-old German shepherd, who was adopted by Amy and Kevin Kaul of Sterling Heights. Kevin is active duty in the U.S. Navy, and the family, including their three children, fell in love with Annie after meeting her at the MHS? off-site adoption center at Petco in Sterling Heights.

Service men and women interested in the program must first apply through Pets for Patriots, located online at www.petsforpatriots.org, and provide proof of their military service. Joining Pets for Patriots is free to veterans and service members and approval typically takes one or two business days. Afterwards, the military member can visit any MHS location to receive expert assistance in choosing a new best friend.

Eligible adopters will have either served or are currently serving in any branch of the United States armed forces at any stage of their careers ? active, reserve, National Guard, retired or veteran. Dogs or cats two years and older, dogs 40-pounds or larger regardless of age, and special needs dogs and cats will be made available for adoption through the program. Through the program, MHS will help any service member in the community in the Pets for Patriots program find a needs- and lifestyle-appropriate pet.

For a listing of adoptable pets, information about the Michigan Humane Society or to make a donation, please visit www.michiganhumane.org or call 1-866-MHUMANE (648-6263) Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Plumbing in Mobile Home

Home Plumbing in mobile home is completely dissimilar from mounting pipes and drains in edifices. Mobile houses are not constructed in the same manner as the regular brick and mortar properties, and subsequently they fall under a diverse set of laws, which makes the construction of pipes and hoses in mobile home different from the regular homes. The method of mounting pipes for movable homes is usually more complicated, as it is cut into a different angle.

Due to the increase in the demand of movable houses for its inexpensive quality, many materials are used in constructing these houses have a tendency to be on the subordinate ending of both price and value. Despite the fact that the quality of materials applied in newer portable homes is more enhanced than the older movable houses constructed in the era of 60?s 70?s and 80?s, nonetheless there are some diversities in home plumbing objects utilized in this procedure.

The tools and the means for supplying these apparatus for installing pipes in the movable houses are persistently being enhanced.?

The new materials applied for home plumbing are simpler to use especially for those who are less experienced in repairing the damaged pipes and hoses. The obvious dissimilarity in standard home plumbing and its process in building edifices is the application of the objects used in piping. The hoses of the movable houses are made of plastic in place of copper finished water tubes. These plastic pipes are not permitted for utilization in site built houses, but these were accepted in transportable homes.

Deplorably, many a times, these hoses caused numerous drips problems. Now-a-days CPVC or PEX piping is used in movable houses, since they are durable due to their copper finished tubes.

The position of the hoses and the process of installation in to the house are completely unusual from edifice constructing home plumbing procedures. Instead of the water lines coming out from the wall, many pipes come directly upward from the floor in the place of entering pipes from the wall. This generally appears not so good, but will give out the equal facilities and acts the same way. A person should keep in mind the setting of the tubes when altering the fixtures of home plumbing in portable home. In these types of houses the sink bathroom cabinets must get sufficient area for permitting the water lines to come in upward directions.?

Look Out Pair, Cupple Is Out To Break Up This Cosy Private Sharing Party

cuppleWhile Pair are popping champagne corks at their funding round today, they better not swig too much bubbly because tomorrow they may have to check out their rear-view mirrors. Co-founder Oleg Kostour seems to think the company?s closest competitor in the 'private sharing' space is Path. He's basically wrong, but then he lives in the Valley echo chamber, so he's excused... Cupple is, frankly, at least as excellent a private sharing app for couples app which actually launched before Pair (and has an equally good name). Its had steady growth since November after being featured on the Apple in the Date Night section of the US store iTunes store (iTunes link).

Junior Seau Dead of Apparent Suicide

Former NFL great Junior Seau was found dead in his home in Oceanside, Calif., today. Police say the likely cause of death was suicide. He was 43 years old.

Law enforcement sources reportedly believe Seau, a USC and pro football standout for 20 seasons, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.

Few other details were immediately available. TV footage showed police swarming his home in North San Diego County and people comforting each other.

He leaves behind four kids and an ex-wife. He reportedly sent text messages to his ex-wife and children yesterday saying simply, "Love you."

Junior Seau Picture

They all responded and didn't suspect anything was wrong, according to TMZ reports, and Seau is said to have last seen his kids three weeks ago.

Sources close to Seau say his family didn't notice any signs of depression in recent weeks, but more details will surely follow in the coming days.

Oceanside Police Chief Frank McCoy just spoke outside Seau's house, claiming Seau's body was initially discovered by the athlete's girlfriend.

A 911 call was placed around 10 a.m. today. Police responded and found Junior's unconscious body inside a bedroom with a gunshot wound to the chest.

McCoy says investigators recovered a handgun in the bedroom, believed to be the weapon, and the case is currently being investigated as a suicide.

Seau was involved in a car accident a few years ago when he drove off a cliff in Carlsbad, Calif., hours after he was arrested for attacking his girlfriend.

Seau later said he was not trying to kill himself ... insisting he had fallen asleep at the wheel. That was 2010, his final season as a professional.

The San Diego Chargers, who employed Junior for most of his career, said in a statement, "Everyone at the Chargers is in complete shock and disbelief right now. We ask everyone to stop what they're doing and send their prayers to Junior and his family."

Seau's explosive play at linebacker with the Chargers, Dolphins and Patriots will likely send him to the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.

Huawei partners with Intel to test TD-LTE interoperability in China

Huawei partners with Intel to test TD-LTE interoperability in China

In a classic case of east meets west, Huawei and Intel have joined forces to create an interoperability test lab that will focus on China's homegrown time-division LTE (TD-LTE) network. While the technology runs contrary to the more common frequency-division LTE (FD-LTE), the Chinese brand of 4G is situated to take root in the US under Clearwire's banner. Through its partnership with Huawei, Chipzilla -- a newbie in the smartphone arena -- will be able to engage in end-to-end testing of its mobile equipment and verify its readiness for TD-LTE. For Huawei's part, it plans to use the test lab as a means to court other handset and chipset manufacturers, and hence drive the adoption of TD-LTE. Naturally, we're left wondering the obvious: whether this unique collaboration will bring about Huawei smartphones with Intel Inside. Mum's the word on that one... for now.

Huawei partners with Intel to test TD-LTE interoperability in China originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 01 May 2012 07:43:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

(AP) ? May Day moved beyond its roots as an international workers' holiday to a day of international protest Tuesday, with rallies throughout Asia demanding wage increases and marches planned across Europe over government-imposed austerity measures.

Thousands of workers protested in the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan and other Asian nations, with demands for wage hikes amid soaring oil prices a common theme. They said their take-home pay could not keep up with rising consumer prices, while also calling for lower school fees and expressing a variety of other complaints.

In debt-crippled Greece, more than 2,000 people marched through central Athens in subdued May Day protests centered on the country's harsh austerity program. Other Europeans also planned to take to the streets to protest measures to cut spending that are being blamed for a big jump in the number of unemployed, particularly in Spain, where one in four people is now out of work.

In the United States, demonstrations, strikes and acts of civil disobedience were planned, including what could be the country's most high-profile Occupy rallies since the anti-Wall Street encampments came down in the fall.

Around 100,000 people in Moscow ? including President Dmitry Medvedev and President-elect Vladimir Putin ? took part in the main May Day march through the city center.

Television images showed the two leaders happily chatting with participants on the clear-and-cool spring day.

Many banners and placards criticized the Russian opposition movement that has become more prominent in Moscow over the past half-year. One read "spring has come, the swamp has dried up," referring to Bolotnaya (Swampy) Square, the site of some of the largest opposition demonstrations in recent months.

In Asia, workers demanded wage increases in peaceful but noisy protests.

In the Philippine capital, Manila, more than 8,000 members of a huge labor alliance, many clad in red shirts and waving red streamers, marched under a brutal sun for 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) to a heavily barricaded bridge near the Malacanang presidential palace, which teemed with thousands of riot police, Manila police chief Alex Gutierrez said.

Another group of left-wing workers later burned a huge effigy of President Benigno Aquino III, depicting him as a lackey of the United States and big business. A few hundred workers marched to the U.S. Embassy, but were stopped by riot police about a block away. The protesters burned a mock U.S. flag and went away.

Aquino rejected their calls for a $3 daily pay hike, which he warned could worsen inflation, spark layoffs and turn away foreign investors.

Aside from pay hikes, protest leader Josua Mata from the Alliance of Progressive Labor urged Aquino to back proposed legislation against the widespread practices by businesses of contracting out some operations to other companies to save on costs and prevent workers from organizing trade unions.

In Indonesia, thousands of protesters demanding higher wages paraded through traffic-clogged streets in the capital, Jakarta, where 16,000 police and soldiers were deployed at locations including the presidential palace and airports.

In Taiwan, several thousand anti-government protesters marched through downtown Taipei, demanding higher wages, lower school tuition and better conditions for foreign workers. Workers waving the Thai flag rallied in Bangkok for better pay.

"It is always the case that low-income groups across Asia feel a disproportionately larger impact of rising prices," said Wai Ho Leong, a Singapore-based economist with Barclays Capital. "Coupled with rising inflation expectations, the case is building to do more for lower income (workers). Minimum wages are one way."

In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, some 500 people rallied, calling for a higher minimum wage than the one announced Monday by Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Najib's plan for the country's first-ever minimum wage calls for minimum monthly pay of 900 ringgit ($297) for private-sector workers in peninsular Malaysia and 800 ringgit ($264) in two poor eastern states. The move is expected to benefit 3.2 million low-income workers, who account for about a third of the country's work force.

The protesters marched from a market to the headquarters of Maybank, the nation's largest bank, calling for a minimum monthly wage of 1,500 ringgit ($496) a month.

In Hong Kong, more than 1,000 joined a protest march to demand that the city's minimum wage, which was introduced exactly a year ago, be raised to 33 Hong Kong dollars ($4.25) per hour from HK$28 ($3.60), according to local broadcaster RTHK. They also want the government of the southern Chinese financial hub to implement a 44-hour work week.

In nearby Macau, about 500 people marched for workers' rights and full democracy in the legislature, the broadcaster said.

Protecting yourself from divorce is not something we want to even have to think about.? I love my husband and I trust him completely.? I have faith in my marriage and the strength of our relationship.? There are, however, two things I do not posses: 1) the ability to read his mind; 2) a crystal ball.? As much as I trust us, I cannot, in good faith, say ?never.?? I have no idea what time or the future has in store for us, but I know that, without his income, I?m vulnerable.? Take the steps in this article and you will be more than on the right path in protecting your financial well-being from the dreaded ?big D.?

Disability & Death

By no means are disability and death the one in the same, but the action you need to take in order to protect yourself from these two threats are: Insurance.? Both you and your spouse need to have adequate insurance coverage in the event of? death or disability.? If your spouse works full-time and is salaried, chances are they already have some type of term life insurance coverage.? As a rule, I personally advise my clients to seek out term life insurance rather than whole life insurance policies because term policies are cheaper and provide the same coverage.

Disability insurance is a lesser known and even less understood insurance policy by most.? You can read more about disability insurance by checking out Quick and Dirty Tips Money Girl article about disability insurance

3.? Don?t turn a blind eye to the family finances

Just because you?re not the money manager in your household doesn?t mean that you?re excused from knowing what is going on with the family finances.? ?I am just not good with money? or ?He handles the money? are not sufficient excuses to ignore your family?s personal finances.

If something were to happen to your spouse, like an unexpected death, do you know the bare bones to run your home, like when the bills are due, or how much your family earns and spends each month?? Do you know how much debt your family is carrying?? Do you know where the passwords are to the online banking and bill paying accounts?? Do you know if you have emergency savings?? Are you an authorized user or a joint account holder for the checking, savings, loans, and credit card accounts?? There?s a difference.

Several years ago I realized that, as the money manager, I was doing a horrible disservice to my spouse if I didn?t inform him about our finances.? From that point forward, mi amor and I sit down at least three times a year to review our personal finances.? You should do the same.

Did you know that Divorce.com cites financial disagreement as the top cause of divorce?? Being on the same page about your finances is a great way to fend off the ?big D.?

4.? Invest in yourself

One day los ninos are going to head out on their own and do wonderful things in the world.? What are you doing to prepare for that inevitable transition?? Will you go back to school or work?

If you?re not actively thinking about and investing in your future, you are selling yourself and your potential short.

Start establishing a goal timeline for yourself to figure out where you want to be in the next 10, 15, 0r 20 years.? If you have a dream, there?s no time like the present to start figuring out how to make that dream a reality.

5.? Save for your retirement

Yes, one day, you will retire.? I don? t know about you, but I plan on being that viejita with the white sun visor and gold tennis shoes living it up by cruising 4 times a year.? Mi amor and I have grand retirement plans, so we?re working hard now to be able to fulfill our senior years dreams.? Hubby has the benefit of a pension and retirement savings with his Air Force career.? When I worked, I set aside in my employer?s 401k, but when I stopped working, so did my contributions.? Did you know that stay at home moms can save for retirement with a spousal IRA?? Check out SmartMoney?s Guide to Spousal IRAs for more information.
